BURRITOS
WHAT IS A BURRITO?
The burrito is a popular Tex-Mex dish across the United States and Mexico. “Burrito” translates to “little donkey” in Spanish. One explanation could be that the burrito contains a lot of different ingredients, similar to how a donkey would be able to carry a large burden.
Another origin theory of the burrito is that there was a man named Juan Mendez, who sold tacos in the city of Ciudad Juarez during the Mexican Revolution, between 1910-1920. According to that story, Mendez rode around on a donkey, and wrapped the food in large flour tortillas to keep it warm. Mendez rode around on a donkey and wrapped the food in a large flour tortilla to keep it warm. The man with the food on his donkey became popular and earned the name ‘burrito’.
This is not just the only story about the origins of the burrito, the other popular story is that of an unnamed street vendor in Ciudad Juarez who created the burrito in the 1940s. The story goes that he sold it to poor children at a nearby school and he would call the children ‘burritos’ as an affectionate nickname.
The last story known about the burrito is that it was invented in Northern Mexico, specifically in the region of Sonora. The burrito was created because it was easy to carry with you while traveling. Back in these times traveling by donkey was very common. This is why the burrito was named after the travel companion, the donkey.
